The Black Candle

The Black Candle is an award-winning documentary film that uses Kwanzaa as a vehicle to explore and celebrate the African-American experience. The film traces the holiday’s growth from the first celebration in 1966 to its present-day reality as a global holiday embraced by over 20 million celebrants. We developed a classic, content-driven site that reflected the tone and celebration of the film.

An identity and color palette was created that would evoke the rich history and celebration Kwanzaa is known for as well as translate successfully across multiple mediums.

Bold imagery was used to convey the struggle and triumph of the African-American family, community and culture.

The rich history of Kwanzaa was translated over in the DVD menu design we created, utilizing historical imagery and appropriate typography.
